In 2005, they released a highly decorative edition of The Complete Works of Lewis Carrolland its popularity sparked the beginning of the ‘Collectible Classics’ as the series is better known today. The contents were mostly omnibus editions (with several titles by the same author in a single book) and the bindings were very traditional, with dark (bonded) leather covers featuring plain gold text and simple foiled borders, along with raised bands on the spine, gilt page edges, decorative endpapers, and a sewn-in ribbon bookmark. The author deftly balances his lovestruck hero's terse yet tender introspection with hard-hitting physical action, as Corson's investigation of Tinsel Town's tarnished underside uncovers drug dealing, gangland vengeance and evidence that the heroine's history may hold even deadlier secrets. And a good opportunity to read Shirley Jackson, so I can then say that I have read Shirley Jackson. Then I heard about Life Among the Savages, Jackson’s lightly fictionalized memoir of living in a rambling old house in Vermont with her cuddly family. So, I thought, Shirley Jackson: not for me. I am not opposed to a little murder (Exhibit A: my multiple shelves of mysteries) but I like the murder to be bloodless and off the page, and ideally the victim to be someone reprehensible, so I don’t feel too badly. The greater story here is Eira’s journey to discover the truth about her past and unlock the potential running through her veins. Though that may be partially true, the maturity of the characters and the situations that they face combats any “teenage drama” that crops up. At first, it appears that this book centers around the hardships of an outcast young girl who’s been burned by love and seeks to prove herself in the face of adversity. ![]() While taking place in an hybrid academy setting, there is very little time spent in a classroom. Aside from an aunt in the guard that she rarely sees, everyone else in Eira’s life had me questioning their true intentions and wondering if and when they’d stab her in the back. Then, once in a while, I will come across books like Zoraida Cordova’s ‘The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina’ that is not only the perfect escapism but also a lesson on love, faith, and remaining true to yourself. It transports you to a different world but offers nothing more that can help you adapt to the realities of life. That is primarily why I’m not very fond of fantasy. They are just so comforting-the balm your soul needs to heal from the tiny daggers of everyday life. Narratives that leave me pondering life and its idiosyncrasies, make me feel good as a sweet-smelling cup of tea on a warm winter Saturday morning when you know you have absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to be. I like stories that I can relate to, with characters that force me to look at people around me in a different light. ![]() |
